Playing in his first test, Shreyas Iyer made a huge statement on the opening day of India’s first test match against New Zealand on Thursday in Kanpur. At No.5, Iyer smashed 75 of 136 balls and went undefeated as India reached 258 for four in 84 assists at Stumps. The elegant batter’s action-packed innings consisted of seven fours and two sixes. Speaking on host broadcaster Star Sports’ post-match show, test legend VVS Laxman praised former Delhi Capitals (DC) captain and called him an “established international cricketer”.
“The bench is solid when it comes to Indian cricket. This may be Shreyas Iyer’s first test, but he’s an established international cricketer (white ball),” said the former Indian hitter. .
Praising his batting style on Day 1, Laxman pointed out that Iyer’s timing, intention and selection of shots were perfect against the Blackcaps.
“He knew when to attack. When to be a little overpowered. What was really good to see was that he didn’t compromise on his natural game,” he said.
The 47-year-old further praised Iyer’s transition to Test cricket.
“The last first class match he played was almost two years ago. The toughest challenge for a youngster is the transformation from red ball cricket to white ball cricket. The temperament is different, the selection of shots. is disputed. Iyer took the pressure off and showed just how strong he has a character, ”he said.
Day 2 is expected to start at 9:30 am IST and Iyer will aim to lean on his shot and bag for a century as he debuts in testing.
