Shikhar Dhawan hosted a batting masterclass as he marked his first century in the Indian Premier League to help the Delhi Capitals beat the Chennai Super Kings in Sharjah on Saturday. Chasing 180 for the win, Dhawan remained undefeated on 101 and he was ably supported first by Shreyas Iyer and then by Marcus Stoinis. The game went on with Delhi needing 17 points for the last. An injury to Dwayne Bravo forced MS Dhoni to face Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel crushed him for three sixes to seal his team’s victory.
With the victory, Delhi rose to the top of the points table. They now have 14 points in nine games with seven wins to their name.
CSK, who had the chance to sneak into the top four on Saturday, remains in sixth place in the points table.
Previously, CSK, after winning the toss and choosing to beat, got off to a bad start losing Sam Curran on the third point of the game.
Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis then stabilized the ship for CSK and completed 87 races for the second wicket. Watson has been cleaned by Anrich Nortje for 35 years. He hit six limits during his time in the middle.
Ambati Rayudu then joined du Plessis in the middle and the duo started hitting the big shots in tandem.
Du Plessis scored half a century but failed to continue for a big round. Rayudu continued his assault and scored a quick shot of 45 bullets on 25 bullets.
Jadeja also contributed with a cameo of 33 out of just 13 deliveries in a round including four sixes.
Nortje was the bowlers’ choice for Delhi as he picked up two wickets for 44 races. Her latest pass cost them 16 points as Jadeja broke through the fence twice to push CSK to a competitive total of 179/4.
CSK will face the Rajasthan Royals on Monday at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The Delhi capitals will travel to Dubai to face the Kings XI Punjab on Tuesday.
