Jeff Bezos has fallen to third in the race for wealth.
The Amazon founder is now the world’s third richest person, after Indian business magnate Gautam Adani Bezos jumped in the latest Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.
According to Bloomberg News, Adani has amassed a fortune of an estimated $146.8 billion, surpassing only Elon Musk’s $263.9 billion.
It is the first time a person from Asia has scored so highly on the Bloomberg list, which has long been dominated by white billionaires.
Bezos follows Adani with just $19 million. Shares of e-commerce goliath Amazon are down 26% this year.
Meanwhile, the shares of Adani Enterprises Ltd. surged over the past week, and according to reports, some of its group of companies are up more than 1,000% since 2020.
Adani’s rise to No. 2 has coincided with a tech sell-off that has carved out more than $45 billion from Bezos’ fortune since January. Bezos — once the richest person in the world — also saw his net worth drop significantly after his 2019 divorce from ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, who received 4% from Amazon.
