The Delhi Capitals returned to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) after a comprehensive victory over SunRisers Hyderabad on Wednesday. It was a full team performance from last season’s finalists as they first limited the SSR to a below par total and then chased it with ease. Kagiso Rabada (3/37).
After the bowlers’ exploits, it was batsmen and opener Shikhar Dhawan who laid the perfect foundation with a 42-point stroke. After his departure, the hunt was finished in style by Shreyas Iyer (47 *) and Captain Rishabh Pant (35 *).
While Iyer himself was calm, Pant also stayed true to his natural instincts and quickly lowered the curtains on the game with his aggressive strikes. The fact that Pant stayed until the end and closed the game for his side is something that former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan says has become a hallmark of his game since he took over. the role of captain of the franchise this season, after Iyer was absent due to injury.
“Showing maturity is what you want to see from a leader, a captain. I’m really happy with the way he hits. I’ve been a huge fan of Rishabh Pant because of the way he hits. plays his punches. The way he plays on the side of the legs, the way he also improved his offside game. Really good to see the way he handled his business. Most importantly he finishes the games for his team since he started being captain. That’s what you want from your captain, ”Pathan said on the Star Sports host broadcasters post-game show.
Pant and Iyer have assembled an undefeated 67-race partnership to bring their team to fruition with more than 2 overs to spare. The victory helped DC consolidate its leadership position and also gave its net running rate a boost, which is always helpful in deciding play-off spots at the end of the Championship phase.
