Indian coach Ishant Sharma is set to make his 100th test when India faces England at Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad on Wednesday. Ahead of the fast bowler’s decisive game, captain Virat Kohli opened up about his relationship with Ishant Sharma and even recounted an incident when the bowler received his very first call-up for the national team. “Ishant started playing state cricket with me. We have long been roommates for state cricket, Ranji cricket,” Kohli said at a virtual press conference ahead of the third test of the series against England.
“When he was selected for India he was sleeping soundly in the afternoon and I had to kick him and wake him up to give him the news. That’s how far we’re going,” Kohli said.
“We have great trust between us. I have been very happy to see him enjoy his bowling over the years,” added the Indian captain.
He also explained how rare it is for a fast bowler to maintain his physical form and show the kind of longevity Ishant has – especially in the game’s longest format.
“Great achievement in modern day cricket to maintain your body like it is and play 100 tests, that’s rare especially among fast bowlers,” Kohli said.
Kohli also said Ishant could have prioritized Limit Pass cricket, but he focused fully on Test Cricket.
India and England enter the third Test with the series tied 1-1 and with a place in the final of the World Test Championship on the line.
