“It depends on players taking responsibility to develop their game to the point” – Andy Roberts says coach is being scapegoated

Cricket West Indies has announced Andre Coley as the interim head coach for the upcoming tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa. Coley joins the Windies at a crucial moment as they try to bounce back from a string of poor performances. Former fast bowler Sir Andy Roberts believes the players are more responsible for the West Indies’ failures than the coaches.

After their elimination in the first round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, WI conducted an internal investigation into the team’s performance, and then coach Phil Simmons announced he would be stepping down after the team’s tour of Australia. The Windies team has changed coaches several times over the past two decades without reaching a resolution.

Coach has to do is make sure they do their drills – Andy Roberts

Pace bowling legend Andy Roberts told the Jamaica Observer that coaches are used as scapegoats for bad results. Roberts stressed that no changes were made to the team after losing the games.

“That’s exactly what they do. They blame someone, they blame the coaches. Why didn’t we make five changes for the one-day international (ODI) team? We lost 2-0 in Australia; why didn’t we make five changes to the testing team?

“My emphasis is not on coaching. It depends on whether the players take the responsibility to develop their game in such a way that the coach only has to make sure that they do their exercises.”

We waste a lot of dollars hiring coaches – Andy Roberts

Roberts said the problems started in 2005, when Australian Bennett King was appointed as the first foreign coach. He believes that implementing many changes is a waste of time and money.

“I think we are wasting a lot of dollars on hiring coaches and our cricket still hasn’t moved an inch. If it moved anywhere, it’s down,” he added.
