Takamatsu, Kagawa Pref. – The Kagawa Prefecture government said on Saturday that bird flu infections had been confirmed at a poultry farm in Mitoyo, signaling the eighth outbreak this year at such a facility in Japan.
Some 77,000 birds raised on the farm will be culled.
After receiving a report on Friday of an increase in the number of dead chickens, the prefecture carried out simple tests and found positive cases.
Genetic testing done later indicated that the virus is most likely highly pathogenic.
On November 5, an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed at another poultry farm in Mitoyo. It was the first such epidemic in Japan in nearly three years.
Since then, more cases of bird flu have been found on the city’s farms.
