Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber, 21, started modeling as a teenager, which forced her to travel the world alone while her parents stayed in Malibu.

And in the February issue of Elle, which she posed for the cover, the beauty shared that she sometimes felt “lonely” without her family around, which affected her mental health, but now she works more from home. She added that it helps to have a therapist as well.

“I’m only 21 and I feel like I’ve lived a whole life,” the Marc Jacobs model told the fashion magazine.

But she remained a professional when she worked full-time as a teenager. Kaia recalled, “Even when I was very tired, wanted to go home, or felt lonely, I reminded myself how lucky I was.”

Kaia has learned a lot while traveling to places like Paris and Milan for her work.

“The opportunity to travel taught me so much from an early age,” said Austin Butler’s girlfriend.

“I got a really great education,” the high school graduate added.

And now she has a career to look back on at the age of 21.

“I have a catalog of images that captured my childhood. You grow and you change: your body, what you like, your taste. Being surrounded by so many creative people has shaped my taste. I’m very much an observer and I remember a lot,” she added.

Mama Cindy was there to coach the young model.

Some of the wisdom Cindy imparted to Kaia included, “Be on time. Take the time to learn people’s names and be nice to everyone. If you’re not grateful and happy to be there, there’s someone who would be.’

But she found friends in the modeling industry to lean on, and she didn’t see the cattiness or competitiveness she’d been warned about.

“I fell into the trap of believing that,” Kaia said of the runway catfights that she doesn’t think actually exist.

“Especially at that time, I was very shy,” noted the star who was booking huge jobs at the age of 18.

“I restrained myself and I was nervous. You come from high school girls who are so scary, and so I assumed that would be the culture. I’ve been lucky enough to meet incredible people from all over the world who took me under their wing. I felt so comfortable having this family away from my own,” the cover girl commented.

Some of her modeling friends are Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber.

But she was able to reconnect with her family during the Covid lockdown.

“Honestly, it came at a time when I really needed it, and it was a really hard time in the world, but I had really reached a point where I felt like I wasn’t falling in love with it anymore [modeling]and I didn’t know you could ask for a break,” the star said.

“I had to stop and realized how badly I needed one.

“When you’re told what to do every day, you don’t have time to sit still and think. But I had gone through so many changes and so many amazing things had happened to me over the years I was modeling.

“I had four or five years of processing to do,” the California resident noted.

“I felt so lucky to be with my family because I was away from them for so much time, and I realized I had so much guilt about missing birthdays and stuff. I had been traveling since I was a teenager, which has allowed me to develop a mature relationship with my family.”

Lockdown allowed her to relax: “I had to stop and realized how much I needed one. When you’re told what to do every day, you don’t have time to sit still and think. But I had gone through so many changes,” she told Elle

“I have developed so many deeper relationships in my life, and a connection with myself as well. When you’re forced to sit with yourself, you’re suddenly aware of all the things you haven’t dealt with yet.

“There was no communication between me and myself, and I felt out of body at times. Once I developed that, I thought, “This isn’t something I want to give up.”

“My personal life and my mental health are not something I’m ever willing to sacrifice for my job again. Right now I’m working from home, which is nice, and not traveling all the time. I come home, and I’m with my dog. I have friends and I am cooking. I see my therapist and I see my family.”

Kaia is also pursuing a film career. She was in American Horror Stories and, more recently, had a small role with Brad Pitt in Babylon. Next is Bottoms with Ruby Cruz for director Emma Seligman.
