Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan responded to the rising #BoycottBollywood trend at a recent event. She attended the Indian Chamber of Commerce-Young Leaders Forum event in Kolkata on Sunday.
While speaking about Boycott Bollywood culture, Kareena said, “I don’t agree at all. If that happens, how will we enjoy ourselves, how will you have the joy and happiness in your life, which I think everyone needs. And what films and films are promising, what we have always done, what films have always done. Agar films nahi hogi toh entertainment kaisa hoga.”
For the inexperienced, the Boycott Bollywood hashtag started trending after the passing of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. However, in 2022, netizens have rekindled the trend before the release of many movies like Laal Singh Chaddha, Liger, Brahmastra and Raksha Bandhan. The trend affected the box office of some films. Just before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha, Twitter users started trending the hashtag #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha asking people not to watch the movie.
At first it seemed harmless, just a group of trolls causing some hysteria around the movie, but when the movie was declared a box office flop, people realized its seriousness. India’s Growing Intolerance’ statement and distributed it on the microblogging site. Some of Kareena’s controversial statements from the past also surfaced online.
Films like Liger and Brahmastra were also called for boycott by many, but Brahmastra did very good business at the box office and emerged as one of the highest grossing films of 2022. The trend started again for SRK and Deepika to release Deepika Padukone’s Pathaan. The song Besharam Rang from the film was put online on December 12 and quickly became the talk of the town. While some liked the spicy track, there were also those who found ‘Besharam Rang’ objectionable for its use of saffron and green costumes. A slew of activists in Indore even staged a protest against Pathaan and Besharam Rang’s song and set fire to images of Deepika and Shah Rukh.
Meanwhile, on the work front, she will next be seen in director Sujoy Ghosh’s thriller which is based on the book The Devotion of Suspect X. It also stars Vijay Varma and Jaideep Ahlawat. In addition, she also has the next self-titled film from director Hansal Mehta. (with input from ANI)
