Kasaragod: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday criticized the left-front government in Kerala for allegedly failing to take constructive steps to end “love jihad” in the state.

Although the Kerala High Court made remarks against “amorous jihad” in 2009, the state government has so far done nothing to verify it, he said.

However, his government (Uttar Pradesh) had enacted legislation to regulate “jihad in love” and forced conversions, Yogi said after inaugurating the state-wide “Vijay Yatra” led by the president of the BJP state unit, K Surendran, ahead of the state assembly elections slated for April-May.

“In 2009, the Kerala High Court declared that amorous jihad would make Kerala an Islamic state. Despite this, the state government is sleeping,” said the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh.

“Love Jihad” is a term used by right-wing activists to refer to the alleged campaign by Muslims forcing Hindu girls to convert under the guise of love.

Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, ruled by the BJP, recently passed religious freedom laws to prevent conversion by marriage or other fraudulent means. Adityanath also criticized the Kerala government over the increase COVID-19[female[feminine positive cases and asserted that his state had effectively fought the pandemic.

The 15-day Vijay Yatra, covering all the main constituencies in 14 districts, is seen as the official launch of the Saffron Party election campaign. Various union ministers and popular leaders and star activists of the Saffron party nationwide are expected to join their multi-day training.
