Liverpool will have their work cut out for signing Teun Koopmeiners this summer after five other clubs have joined in the chase to sign the talented AZ Alkmaar midfielder.
The 23-year-old midfielder has garnered attention over the past two seasons after some inspired performances in the Eredivisie. Able to play as No.8 or as a defensive midfielder, Koopmeiners recently won his first senior cap for Holland.
These demonstrations also saw him rewarded by the AZ captaincy at the age of 22. However, his time at AFAS Stadium could end this summer with a number of teams all keen to land him.
Indeed, while AZ judges it very well, it is widely believed that an offer of 20 million euros will convince them to sell. He has a contract until 2023 and this summer is considered the perfect time to cash in.
Liverpool are believed to be at the top of this queue. Boss Jurgen Klopp is believed to have named Koopmeiners as the perfect replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum. His compatriot is watching increasingly likely to leave this summer with a free transfer to Barcelona.
However, despite a place in the Reds engine room that could potentially open up for Koopmeiners, this is by no means a deal made for Liverpool.
Indeed, according to AS, four other clubs have also joined Liverpool in the midfield race. The Spanish newspaper say Sevilla are also making moves to sign the midfielder. They are joined by three Italian teams in AS Roma, Inter Milan and Naples.

Leeds United want Koopmeiners too
The interest doesn’t stop there either. Leeds United are also believed to be extremely attached to Koopmeiners, having spotted him for the past 18 months. Marcelo Bielsa’s side considered an approach last summer for the player.
However, their need is now much greater with Mateusz Klich revealing his difficulties in recent weeks. Additionally, Bielsa’s team have looked vulnerable in the middle of the park whenever pivot Kalvin Phillips is out. As such, Leeds have made reinforcements in the midfield one of their top priorities this summer.
With 17 goals and seven assists for AZ this season, it’s easy to see why Koopmeiners are in demand.
