Controversial Liberal MP Craig Kelly has resigned and will sit as an independent, rising to the crossbar.
Mr Kelly, who has represented Hughes’ federal headquarters since 2010, reportedly delivered a letter to Prime Minister Scott Morrison during a meeting in the party hall on Tuesday morning.
The TBEN reports that the backbench MP has told his colleagues he does not want to be a “distraction” for the Morrison government.
It is understood that Mr. Kelly will sit in the back seat and continue to provide supplies to the government.
Mr Kelly has been a controversial figure throughout the pandemic, sharing disinformation about coronaviruses, and had been frowned upon by the Liberal Party ahead of the next federal election.
In recent weeks, Mr Kelly has continued to post on Facebook about the controversial drug ivermectin as a COVID treatment. His posts were consistently among the most popular of all Australian politicians.
In early February, following a high-profile confrontation with shadow Labor Minister Tanya Plibersek in the halls of Parliament, Mr Kelly was sternly told by the Prime Minister that his views on COVID potentially affected the deployment of the vaccine.
