Man beaten with sticks, woman beaten to death for suspicion of theft in Bengal: cops

Canning (West Bengal):

A group of people beat a 41-year-old woman to death and injured her husband in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on suspicion of being thieves, police said on Saturday.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the incident that occurred Friday in the village of Chinepukur under the jurisdiction of the Kashipur police station.

According to the complaint filed by the woman’s husband Ali Hossein Molla, a total of 14 people beat him with sticks and rods accusing him of stealing something from the house of one of them.

When Ali protested, the accused persons who were his neighbors assaulted his wife, Sufia Bibi, until she fell unconscious.

Local people took the couple to a local primary health center from where the woman was transferred to a hospital in Kolkata. She was pronounced dead there, police said.

An investigation was opened after the complaint was filed and the main defendant along with three others were arrested, police said, adding that efforts were underway to catch the other FIR appointees.
