Man Utd stunned as Liverpool overtake them in race for € 50million goal

Despite rumors linking him to Manchester United, it is actually Liverpool who are leading the race to sign Cristian Romero, according to an update from Italy.

Romero has risen to prominence in Serie A in recent years, winning Juventus after a successful 2018-19 season with Genoa. He has never played for Juve since then, spending the following season on loan at his former club before a two-year loan at Atalanta.

Atalanta actually finished above Juventus in the 2020-21 Serie A edition, with Romero being a key part of their defense. Since they have an obligation to buy it, it is now up to them to decide its future.

They are now pushing back interests elsewhere in the Argentina international. For example, Manchester United have been heavily linked – with some complaints they had even saw a declined offer.

Atalanta knows that his market value has increased a lot more than what they are obligated to pay for him. Therefore, they want to receive a substantial sum if they want to let him go.

They have reportedly told Man Utd they should increase their bid above £ 50million. But it seems that if anyone is going to act in their best interests, it is not United, but their rivals Liverpool.

According to Calciomercato, Liverpool are more interested in Romero than United. In fact, they are the ones who made a concrete proposal.

Liverpool are currently well stocked as a center-back, having struggled in this department due to injuries last season. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all ended the campaign on the sidelines.

In their absence, Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams have stepped up, as they have since completed the signing of Ibrahima Konate to add more quality to it.

But Romero is another big potential player who could join the new signing at Anfield.

The report recalls that it would take at least 50 million euros to tempt Atalanta to let Romero go.

Liverpool will eliminate the defense?

If Liverpool are genuinely interested in Romero it would indicate that they are considering getting rid of at least one of their own options.

Van Dijk’s future will be secure when he returns from injury, as will Gomez’s. Matip could face a less certain future as the club have been asked to cash in. And so would Ben Davies, who hasn’t even played after arriving in January.

But maybe the the candidate most likely to leave is Phillips, despite the fact that he won the hearts of fans with his performances as a substitute.

“I loved every minute of it and would love to continue playing for the club,” Phillips told the Echo of Liverpool recently.

“But I also have to take into consideration what’s best for my career. It will depend on what role Liverpool see they play or don’t have for me and I’ll have to go from there.
