Opening the baton for the first time this season, Jonny Bairstow gave the SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) a head start in their pursuit race with a quick shot against the Mumbai Indians. The England wicket-keeper batsman was promoted in order after Wriddhiman Saha, who had opened the stick in the previous two matches, was taken out of the game XI after two poor outings. Taking the opportunity, Bairstow made 43 balls on just 22 balls as SRH ran to 67 without a loss after seven passes. As Mumbai bowlers struggled to keep him quiet, Bairstow’s ill-fated dismissal gave them a silver lining to pull things off.

In the eighth of innings, Krunal Pandya threw a short delivery and Bairstow went a little too deep inside the crease in order to sweep it over the midwicket, his back leg disrupting the furniture behind him, which led to his departure.

Promoted

Understandably, Mumbai Indian supporters thanked Bairstow for lending them a hand, but SSR fans were disheartened for building the momentum. As expected, hardcore SRH fans were unhappy, but others took the opportunity to create a festival of memes on Twitter.

Some users even shocked that the wicket was credited to Krunal’s account, robbing the drummer of his hard work to create a wicket opportunity out of thin air.

After Bairstow left, SRH lost four close-interval wickets, with Rahul Chahar picking three to bring Mumbai back into the contest, as he did in their previous match against Kolkata Knight Riders.

In the end, SRH suffered another batting meltdown and the Mumbai Indians knocked them out by 137 points, winning the game by 13 points.
