A total of 78 cows belonging to a private government-funded cattle shelter in Churu district have died of suspected food poisoning in the past 24 hours, an official said on Saturday.
While 78 cows have died since Friday night, a few more are sick, an official with the state’s animal husbandry department said.
At first glance, the animals died of food poisoning, said Dr Jagdish, deputy director of the Department of Animal Husbandry.
He indicated that the teams of the department are present in the cow shelter located in the village of Bilyubas Rampura in Sardarshahar.
Forage samples were collected for testing, he added.
The death of so many cows happened a day before ‘Gopasthmi’, a festival dedicated to cows and Lord Krishna.
