Munar walks past Fognini in Marbella

Jaume Munar claimed his first Top 20 win of the year in style, losing just three games to second seed Fabio Fognini on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the AnyTech365 Andalusian Open.

Munar watched home for an hour and 24 minutes on Estadio Manolo Santana, where he reached the final here in Marbella during the ATP Challenger Tour event last week. The Spaniard broke Fognini’s serve six times after 16 break opportunities before securing a 6-2, 6-1 victory.

The No. 95 player in the FedEx ATP rankings has arrived in Spain after a strong run in South America. He reached the quarterfinals of the Argentine Open in Buenos Aires after qualifying, and backed it up with a doubles final at the Chile Dove Men + Care Open in Santiago (with Delbonis).

On the other hand, his opponent Fognini was playing his first clay game of the year in Marbella before his defense of the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters title. It took a few games for Fognini to find his lineup in the first set, but by then he was already off a double break and leading 5-1. The Italian couldn’t recover and only won one more match as Munar stormed the second set.

Ivashka, No.115 in the FedEx ATP Rankings, shot six aces and saved all nine break points he had to face to defeat the Spaniard and reach his first TBEN quarterfinal of the year.

Also in action, third-seeded Casper Ruud reserved his own place in the quarter-finals after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gianluca Mager. He awaits sixth-seeded winner Feliciano Lopez and #NextGenATP Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.
