Australian Nathan Lyon has noble plans to join a few greats to capture 500 test wickets with India the next team in their sights. Lyon, who turned 33 on Friday, currently has 390 scalps, behind only Shane Warne (708) and Glenn McGrath (563) in the Australian pecking order. Sri Lankan legend Muttiah Muralitharan holds the all-time record with 800 wickets. Although Mitchell Swepson has knocked on the door – and in the 17-man Australian test squad to take on India – Lyon remain his side’s main spin option and he has no plans to give up. .
“I still feel like I’m improving and I still feel I have a lot of cricket to offer Cricket Australia,” he said in a Q&A with News Corp readers. Thursday evening. “Definitely 500 (counters) and beyond are on my radar.”
He said he felt he only got better with age.
“I think it’s a profession that we can’t afford to rush,” he said. “It’s a trade that you learn and you keep learning and you get better with age.”
Lyon will hit the 100 test milestone against India in Brisbane if they were to, as planned, play the previous tests in Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, from December 17.
Adelaide’s test will be her first since January due to Covid-19, a void that has only fueled her desire to continue.
“Without being able to play the game you love so much and not being able to play that regularly, it has motivated my passion to go out and this thirst to perform well again,” he said.
“The most that I’ve missed is that pressure that comes with playing test cricket. It lacks that adrenaline.”
