If you missed the high-speed broadband connection during the initial deployment, you might be able to join the NBN upgrade queue.

On Tuesday, NBN Co expanded the list of suburbs where eligible customers will be able to request an upgrade from fiber to the node (FTTN) to preferred fiber to the premises (FTTP) later this year.

The move is part of the government’s $ 3.5 billion campaign to give Australians stranded on slow internet connections access at peak speeds, with 1.1 million eligible homes and businesses announced to date.

NBN upgrades reported

While the struggling FTTN has been the focus of the upgrade program, NBN Co revealed on Tuesday that customers with fiber-to-the-curb (FTTC) connections would also be eligible for upgrades. in the future.

“NBN Co is currently engaged in consultation with Internet retailers to define the process by which customers living in eligible premises currently served by FTTN or FTTC will be notified that their premises are eligible to receive faster services,” the company said. .

“Due to FTTC’s current faster capabilities, in its industry consultation paper, NBN Co proposed that customers living or working in premises currently served by this technology will need to order a plan based on speed levels of bulk of 250/25 Mbps or higher to benefit from a full fiber upgrade. “

Orders to be launched in November

The FTTN upgrade schedule was first revealed in October, with Communications Minister Paul Fletcher announcing the government would roll out fiber ‘on demand’ to the 40% of households stuck on outdated FTTN technology copper-based, installed under “NBN.

NBN Co said the design and construction of the node-to-premises network upgrade program was “currently underway” with the company expecting to “launch a small-scale launch that will allow the first customers to place orders. from online retailers for fiber inputs. and faster services in certain eligible areas from November 2021 ”.

“We are on track to meet our goal of enabling approximately 8 million premises or up to 75% of homes and landline businesses to access NBN’s highest wholesale speed levels,” they want it, by 2023, ”said NBN Co chief executive Stephen Rue.

The government has been criticized for its decision to use copper FTTN connections across much of the network, with telecommunications experts warning that the technology was “not fit for purpose.”

But Mr. Rue defended the multi-tech deployment.

“We have very deliberately deployed the National Broadband Network at a steady pace across Australia using a range of technologies to ensure we can provide access to broadband broadband services across Australia as quickly as possible. “, did he declare.

“We are now well engaged with the next long-planned phase of the evolution and development of the network to provide more customers with access to the highest levels of wholesale speed of NBN currently available.”

How do I check if I am eligible?

NBN Co plans to update the functionality of its “Verify Your Address” tool by November to allow customers to verify if they are eligible for an FTTP upgrade.

For now, here is the current list of NBN Co suburbs and towns where eligible customers will be online first as part of the upgrade program:
