With unmatched travel benefits and premium perks, the American Express Business Platinum Card® is one of the best business cards on the market. In particular, the benefits of the Amex Business Platinum make the card a great choice for business owners who travel frequently and charge thousands of dollars in monthly business expenses on their cards.
If you are thinking of adding Amex Business Platinum to your portfolio, now is the perfect time with the new welcome bonus. Today I’m going to review this new welcome bonus as well as what you need to know about Amex Business Platinum before you apply for the card.

The Amex Business Platinum Card currently offers a two-part welcome bonus:
- Earn 85,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $ 15,000 on qualifying purchases with your card in the first three months
- Earn 5x Membership Rewards points on shipping, wireless phone services, certain media advertising, office supplies and gas stations when you use your card for qualifying U.S. purchases in these categories in the first three month (up to 80,000 bonus points per category)
To get the 85,000 point bonus, your business will have to spend a large amount of spending on the card over a short period of time. However, the $ 15,000 in spending required to earn this bonus is less than the $ 20,000 in spending we’ve seen on previous Amex Business Platinum bonuses. So if your business can spend $ 15,000 in three months but would struggle to spend $ 20,000 in the same period, this welcome bonus can be particularly attractive.
Likewise, you may want to consider applying now even if your business will not meet the minimum spending requirement of $ 15,000 in the first three months. After all, you can still reap great value from 5x earnings in certain categories of businesses in your first three months.
Finally, you should consider signing up now if you incur a large expense in any of the 5x welcome bonus categories. For example, if you spend $ 16,000 on qualifying US shipping purchases in your first three months, you will earn the 85,000 point bonus as well as 80,000 bonus points due to 5 times your earnings. And it’s possible to earn a total welcome bonus of up to 485,000 Membership Rewards points if you’ve spent $ 16,000 in each of the 5x bonus categories in your first three months.
But let’s say you earn 165,000 Membership Rewards points from the two tier welcome bonus. According to the most recent TPG ratings, 165,000 Membership Rewards points are worth $ 3,300 in travel. However, you may be able to get even more value using points for premium bounty redemptions once the journey is restarted.

Can I get an Amex Business Platinum card if I already have the personal version?
The advantage of this two tier welcome bonus is that the personal and professional versions of the Amex Platinum are considered different products. So, if you have already received the welcome bonus on the Platinum Card® from American Express, Amex’s one per life bonus card rule will not prevent you from getting that bonus either.
Likewise, you may be eligible to earn a welcome bonus on the Amex Business Platinum even if you already have the American Express® Business Gold Card.

At the end of the line
The American Express Business Platinum Card has an annual fee of $ 595 (see rates and fees). But if you max out the $ 200 annual credit for airfare and the $ 200 Dell credit, you’ll effectively pay a net cost of just $ 195 per year for the card. And once you factor in Global Entry / TSA Precheck credit, lounge access, and other perks, the Amex Business Platinum can easily be worth it.
In virtually every airport in the world, the card will take you to a lounge. At Hilton and Marriott hotels, the card will give you elite status. And when booking a trip, it’s the card that can offer a 35% discount on some tickets when you pay with points. Frankly, there is no other business card on the market that offers as many travel benefits as this one.
