New Orleans has overtaken St. Louis as America’s homicide capital as the city has seen its homicide rate increase by 141% compared to the past few years.
According to data from the Metropolitan Crime Commission, an organization that detects and also tries to reduce crime, there were 52 murders per 100,000 inhabitants as of September 11.
In St. Louis, there were nearly 45 homicides per 100,000 residents on Sept. 17, according to data from the St. Louis Police Department.
By comparison, there are nearly 18 homicides per 100,000 population in Chicago and 3.5 in New York City.

According to the data, the homicide rate in New Orleans is up 141% compared to 2019 and 78% compared to 2021, according to the data, which says 205 homicides were committed in the city from early 2022 to September 11.
New Orleans has also seen a 100% increase in 2022 compared to 2019.
On Sept. 8, New Orleans officials announced an $80 million plan to increase police officers’ wages, provide free health care and $30,000 in increased hiring incentives for new hires within the department.

The city recently hired a consultant, former New York City Police Department patrol chief Fausto Pichardo, to look at ways police can better fight crime, according to TBEN 8.
Pichardo said in his report released Tuesday that police “must take action now” if the city is to be saved.
“Action must be taken NOW if there is ever a chance to save the city and bring the reputation of a city where tourists can come party and celebrate and not become victims,” Pichardo wrote.

One of the recommendations is an immediate reassignment of 212 police officers to patrol in place of their current assignments.
