SACRAMENTO (TBEN) – One of Governor Gavin Newsom’s children may have been exposed to the coronavirus at school and is in quarantine, a spokesperson said on Friday.
The child began a 14-day quarantine “from date of exposure” after family learned that a private school classmate had tested positive for COVID-19, Nathan Click said in a press release sent by email.
The rest of the governor’s family is not in quarantine because they were not directly exposed.
“The family took the potential exposure seriously and are following all state protocols,” Click said.
The governor, his wife and their four children have tested negative for the virus, Click said. He did not identify the child who was in quarantine.
Newsom ran a rapid test this week which came back negative and it will have regular testing this weekend, Click said.
The story was first reported by Politico.
Newsom said last month his children had returned to their private school in Sacramento, drawing criticism even as millions of public schoolchildren continued to study online or through other distance learning measures due to the COVID-19 issues.
Click said Newsom “has made the safety of students and staff a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic and has fought for every child – whether in a classroom or at home – to learn. “
The school where Newsom’s child was exposed will stop in-person learning and switch to distance learning after the Thanksgiving break until the second week of December, in part due to the risk of more infection. high associated with vacation activities, according to an email, according to Politico. got.
The governor also fired on fire this week for apparently flouting the very social distancing rules he urged Californians to follow diligently to reduce a rising COVID-19 infection rate.
Newsom said this week he made a “big mistake” by attending a friend’s birthday dinner on November 6 at the chic French Laundry restaurant in Napa County. He apologized and described the dinner as outside. But photos obtained by Fox 11 TV in Los Angeles show Newsom and his wife, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, seated unmasked around a packed table of 12 people – including several lobbyists – in a room closed on three sides.
Napa is one of 41 counties that, as of Saturday night, will be subject to a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew that prohibits people from non-essential activities and orders bars, restaurants and other businesses to close during these hours.
The counties fall under the most restrictive “purple” level of the four levels of the state allowing stages of economic reopening. Private and public schools that are already open for in-person learning in these counties are allowed to remain open.
