Nick Kyrgios: “This is our best shot” | ATP circuit

Nick Kyrgios has made no secret of how important the Laver Cup is to him. The Australian likes the team atmosphere and plays for more than him.

The 26-year-old has made the first three editions of the event, facing Roger Federer each time. But will Kyrgios be able to lead Team World to their first victory against Team Europe?

“I think it’s our time. I think with the big three of Europe obviously sitting with injuries, all that, I think it’s our best shot, ”said Kyrgios. “I think we are the best known team. I think the crowd will be right behind us, and I think from the start the energy will be there.

Kyrgios always brings energy, whether he’s on the pitch or cheering on the bench. The six-time TBEN titlist wears his heart on his sleeve, especially at this event.

“I usually don’t cry a lot when I lose games, and I’ve had some tough losses here against Roger in Prague, and Jack [Sock] must have kind of come up to me and comfort me at that point, ”Kyrgios said. “It definitely brings out a range of emotions that you don’t feel, I don’t feel when I play another event.”

World team captain John McEnroe is delighted his team has another chance with Team Europe. Does the former world No. 1 think it will be a lucky fourth time for his group?

“I hope so. It’s so close every year. We could taste it. I know we’re all hungry and impatient,” McEnroe said. “We have a good mix. We have people who can take the racket with their hands, and that’s the plan. Plus, we have people who have never been here before, and I think this combination gives us good energy. “

McEnroe was referring to the power and shooting abilities of his players. Two examples are the Americans John Isner and Reilly Opelka, who identify themselves as “servebots”.

“The [are] not a lot of secrets for our games. It definitely starts with our serve, trying to put pressure on the scoreboard, which is very real, especially against European caliber players, ”Isner said. “I think our plan is to try to keep these games close, to give them some points here and there, and hopefully we can try to earn those points.

“We are servebots, that’s what we do. Like I said, try to maintain the service as much as possible. We probably don’t want to go overboard with these guys too much. They are all in the Global Top 10 for a reason. But like Captain McEnroe said, we have a lot of power and weapons on our side, and we just have to use them and hope it’s good enough.

Kyrgios is a huge fan of the Boston Celtics, the legendary NBA team that plays at TD Garden, the venue of this year’s Laver Cup. Although the Australian really enjoys competing in such an environment, he is focused on the job at hand.

“I trust everyone on this table. I’m sitting down with some of the best players in the world, and they know what to do. They have won many, many matches, ”Kyrgios said. “You just have to go out there and enjoy it. You don’t know how long you are going to stay at this level and how many times you are going to play the Laver Cup. I’m just gonna kiss her again and these guys are gonna like it.
