Nubia’s flagship Redmagic 8 Pro is coming to Singapore on February 2, 2023
Nubiaan independent Chinese smartphone manufacturer formerly under the ZTE umbrella has announced its flagship gaming smartphone for 2023: the Nubia Red Magic 8 Pro.
Nubia promises plenty of optimizations that improve mobile gameplay, with these features transitioning into general performance improvements for other phone features.
It packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset clocked at 3.2 GHz. For those just joining us, the SD8G2 is Qualcomm’s latest mobile platform for Android phone makers making premium handsets. You can see what the chipset has to offer and how it compares to its predecessor here. Network nerds will be happy to know that it supports 5G6G and even Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, on top of offering conventional options like NFC, Bluetooth 5.3 and a 3.5mm audio jack.
To milk the performance of its premium chipset, Nubia paired the Redmagic 8 Pro with other key components to maximize uptime. It comes with LPDDR5X RAM (more than double LPDRR5 RAM speeds), and an additional Red Core 2 game processor for 20% extra GPU performance.
For heat management, it includes a liquid cooling plate (Vapour Chamber) with unspecified “600% higher” efficiency, on top of quiet 4dB, 20,000RPM built-in RGB turbofans to accelerate heat dissipation through the 10 layers of cooling materials. Nubia claims the cooling design maintains a maximum hull velocity of 41.7°C.
In fact, the cooling techniques feel quite over the top. Cooling layers include a plate, graphene under the shield, a centrifugal fan, air intake, an aluminum center frame with rare earth materials, copper foil under the shield, conductivity gel, composite graphene, and another superconducting copper foil, all sandwiched within the cellphone.
The screen has a Full HD+ resolution (2,480 x 1,116 pixel resolution) 6.8-inch AMOLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 960 Hz touch frequency, with a peak brightness of 1,300 nits and a screen-to-body ratio of 93.7% (minimum bezels of 1.48 to 2.28 mm on the sides). A further enhancement to the panel is BOE’s UDC technology, which adds transparent circuitry under the screen for a see-through effect even at high pixel density (up to 400 PPI).
The battery provides 6,000 mAh with 65 W GaN fast charging. To further optimize consumption, Redmagic 8 Pro has “Cube Performance Optimiser” (CPO) that compensates for in-game frame rates by using the cache and screen to process graphics when there is no user interaction (e.g. during cutscenes).
Physical improvements include built-in 520Hz dual shoulder triggers for game controller. It still offers a complete set of triple cameras on the rear (50 MP main camera with Samsung GN5 sensor, 2 MP macro, 8 MP wide-angle lens) and a 16 MP selfie camera under the screen.
In case you’re wondering, yes, the Redmagic 8 Pro is Android 13with its own reskin called Redmagic Mora 6.0 (with perks like dynamic backgrounds, Game Space plugins and other secondary features).
