ODI Cricket is still exciting as long as they score runs – Glenn McGrath

Legendary Australian National Cricket Team pacer Glenn McGrath has said he is a “traditionalist” and loves the Test and ODI formats. He also said that Test cricket is the ultimate format and that it should be protected.

Speaking of the ODIs, Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath said he finds 50-over cricket exciting as long as players score runs. However, he admitted that ODI faces a challenge with the popularity of T20 cricket and steps need to be taken to make the 50-over format more exciting.

“I am very much a traditionalist. I liked Test, I liked my ODIs. Test cricket is still the ultimate for me. I hope it is protected and still held in high regard,” McGrath told reporters during an interaction.

“As for the ODIs, it’s still exciting as long as they score points. Interesting to see the future (of ODIs) and see where it goes. They need to keep making it (ODIs) exciting. They have a few challenges” , he added.

McGrath also said that the players are getting more money in T20 cricket these days and many youngsters who choose to only play T20s will come as no surprise.

“I’d like to think that. See teams now have separate T20 and ODI teams… they’re almost getting more specific. Yes, the money is in T20 cricket, isn’t it? To be fair, a lot of players, a lot of young people coming up, will be looking for T20s. ”

Legendary Australian National Cricket Team pacer McGrath will complete a decade as the ‘Director of Coaching’ at the MRF Pace Foundation. He said he enjoyed his assignment and was proud of all the players who made it to the IPL, as well as Avesh Khan and Prasidh Krishna, who have represented India.

“It’s been 10 years (laughs)… the last 2 were a bit unreliable. It’s been great. I enjoyed it. Our goal was to continue what Dennis (Lillee) had done.

“I knew I couldn’t just come in and fill those shoes. He (Lillee) is the best bowling coach in my opinion. It’s about teaching the young boys, the next generation, to become self-sufficient.”

“To see 29 of our boys and ex-boys play in the recent IPL was a proud moment. Prasidh and Avesh represented India in limited overs cricket. I’m really proud of them…proud of all the boys,” added McGrath, who took over from Lillee.

Speaking of the India skipper, McGrath said that Rohit Sharma is doing well after a poor IPL 2022 season, which is good news for India. He said:

I think it’s good news. He is a class player. You want him to be okay. You want to see the older players do well. You recently saw Shubman Gill get a good score in the West Indies. The batsmen are doing their job in the West Indies.”

Glenn McGrath further praised Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya and said he is a confident player.

“Cricket is a real confidence sport. Hardik is a very confident player. If he bowls well, it has a positive influence on his striking ability. He is two players in one. He is a luxury. He is a good, intelligent bowler and a powerful batter. He has a good game plan.”
