The pandemic is essentially over, right?
For some, yes. For others not so much.
It wasn’t until June when unvaccinated Canadians were finally allowed to leave the country, for no apparent reason. The vaccine doesn’t prevent transmission, so how did it make sense to keep the unvaccinated behind the frozen curtain? It didn’t.
But that’s Canada. It has completely lost the plot with COVID and threw all its previously freedom-loving ideals out the nearest window, right? That’s not how America would behave, would it?
Tennis player Novak Djokovic was unable to go to America in August to participate in the US Open because he is not vaccinated. No foreigner may enter the United States without being fully vaccinated. Unless, of course, they cross our border. Correct. If you’re visiting, stay away from your COVID-ravaged self. If you’re trying to stay here forever, bring that COVID in right away.
If you’re looking for consistency in COVID-19 policy, stop now. None of that ever made sense. The breach of trust between the Americans and our institutions will be immeasurable. And the damage continues.
New York City kids don’t need COVID vaccination to go to school, but to do needed to play school sports. Think about this. These kids can go to school, have lunch with their friends, go on field trips and play sports in gym class, but they can’t play in an after-school league.
Many children depend on sports to pay for their higher education. Think of all the children who stop working out after school because they can’t exercise.
If we’re doing this for the “health” of children, we’re doing it all wrong. The poor will be hurt the most by these no-science-anywhere rules. Professional athletes who play in the city, of course, have no such mandate.
It’s not just sports. A few days ago, the New York City Department of Education fired an additional 850 teachers and classroom assistants, bringing the total to about 1,950 DOE employees since the October 2021 vaccine mandate. It was a terrible thing to do, even then, just a year later we have an avalanche of information about how COVID spreads and what the vaccines can’t do that makes the decision not only foolish but cruel.
As Susan Edelman of The Post reported a few days ago, “In all, NYC has laid off more than 2,600 city workers who are not fully vaccinated.” This, when we are told that New York and so many other places are in the midst of a teacher shortage. These teachers explore possibilities in faraway places like Long Island. Make it meaningful.
Parents also cannot enter New York school buildings if they are not vaccinated. So are parents of children with special needs, who need to communicate with teachers. These nonsensical rules do permanent damage.
If you’re vaccinated and think, “Those people should just get vaccinated,” you’re missing the point. I am also vaccinated. But there’s absolutely no reason why my March 2021 Johnson & Johnson withdrawal should give me privileges not accorded to others. Studies show that the effectiveness of the vaccine decreases after a few months and transmission can occur at any time.
Forced compliance for fun should not be a health policy.
And no, boosters don’t mean you’re safer. In fact, the Biden administration doesn’t label the latest shot a “booster” at all. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre called it a “new vaccine.” You may come back to the “unvaccinated” sooner than you think.
But don’t take my word for it. During the pandemic, the rule of politicians pushing their will on us was, “We must listen to the CDC!” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, whose guidance we’d ignored as we ate sushi (a big no-no) and medium-cooked burgers (seriously, are you trying to die on this picnic?), suddenly spewed the word of God.
Well, the CDC recommends “stop differentiating based on a person’s vaccination status because breakthrough infections are occurring.” But somehow we no longer follow “the science”?
It’s maddening. And it’s easy to forget these left behind people. But we will feel the effects of their absence. The off-duty police officer, the firefighter who survived the pandemic but is now out of work, the teachers who are missing from your child’s class because they wouldn’t do as they were told. And we will see repercussions if we take things from the youth for not adhering to them.
We have gained absolutely nothing with these vaccine mandates – but we will have lost so much.
Politicians have done so many backward, horrible things in the name of security during COVID. The ongoing vaccine mandates are a reminder that the pandemic is over for many, but the evil continues.
