Passenger vehicle sales drop nearly 18 percent in 2020

2020 has been an extremely difficult year for the auto industry, and we now have a clear picture of what it looked like, with passenger vehicle sales falling 17.85 percent year over year. According to data shared by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), passenger vehicle sales amounted to 24.33,464 units between January and December 2020, compared to 29,62,115 units sold during the same period in 2019. Almost 18% decline was recorded by the sector for the second year in a row since PV sales also declined in 2019 due to a struggling economy and low buying sentiment.

Passenger car sales in 2020 amounted to 14,32,304 units, registering a decrease of 21.30%, compared to 18,19884 units sold in 2019. At the same time, sales of commercial vehicles fell by 8.89% to 897,406 units sold last year compared to 984,928 units sold the previous year. Sales of vans amounted to 103,754 units in 2020, down 34.04% from 157,303 units sold in 2019.

The decline in volumes was even more significant in the two-wheeler sector, with sales falling 23.15% with 14,268,430 units sold in 2020. By comparison, 18,566,857 units were sold in 2019. Motorcycles continued to remain the main contributors in the segment with 94,58,577 units sold in 2020, recording a decrease of 21.26%, compared to 12,011,692 units sold in 2019. However, scooter sales saw the largest decline of 28% with 42,05,194 units sold, against 58,41,184 units. Mopeds contributed 603,242 units to the overall volume of two-wheelers in 2020, but sales decreased by 15.51% compared to 2019. Finally, sales of electric two-wheelers amounted to 1,417 units in 2020 , according to SIAM data.

The commercial vehicle industry also had one of its worst years, with sales falling 40.90%. Approximately 505,189 units were sold in calendar year 2020, up from 854,783 units in 2019. Three-wheeler sales fell 62.12% with 260,412 vehicles sold last year, compared to 687,446 units sold. the previous year.


Collectively, the automotive sector sold a total of 17,467,456 units between January and December 2020, registering a decrease of 24.29% from 23,072,564 units sold in 2019.
