One person has been arrested following a shooting Friday at a Virginia elementary school that left a teacher injured, police and the Newport News school district said.
The incident occurred at Richneck Elementary School around 2 p.m.
No students were injured, police said in a statement pronunciation Just before 3 p.m., the female employee was taken to hospital in unknown condition after sustaining a gunshot wound, police chief Steve Drew said.
Officers were at the school “within minutes” after a call about shots being fired, the police chief said at a news conference. The shooting took place at one location in the building.
All students have now moved to the gymnasium and are being reunited with their parents.
“The most important thing right now is that we have all these kids safe and the first priority for me is to check our victim in the hospital and bring all these students back with their families,” Drew told reporters.
This is an evolving story. Check back later for updates.
