Pirelli unveils tire choices for the 2021 F1 season

Pirelli has announced its compound picks for the 2021 Formula 1 season, with its selection largely in line with last year’s approach.

While in the past Pirelli has decided on its tire choices a few weeks before races, it has chosen to plan the entire campaign for 2021 due to the ongoing complications caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mario Isola, Head of F1 and Motor Racing at Pirelli, said: “The immediate announcement of all the selections for the year will help teams and drivers in their planning, also allowing maximum flexibility in case the schedule is expected to change due to Covid-19 restrictions, as we saw last year. “

While Pirelli brings a soft, medium and hard to every race, the actual selection of compounds varies from track to track.

For 2021, the compounds are roughly aligned with what has been used in the past – although softer rubber will be transported to Baku and Brazil.

Isola added: “The selections themselves are broadly similar to last year (or 2019, in the case of races not contested in 2020), which means teams should have a lot of data on which ones to fall back on – but we have two races where the nominations are softer.

“The first is Azerbaijan, where our C2 hard tire was not used last time, so we now go for the softer selection of all: C3, C4 and C5.

“Then we have Brazil, where we will take the C2, C3 and C4 this year, because the C1 which was chosen as the most difficult choice last time did not show a particularly big advantage in terms of wear. on the medium.

“In either case, the softer appointment could lead to a greater variety of racing strategies.”

As F1 continues to use different protocols due to covid, the next campaign will be one where each driver will receive the same allowance of sets of tires every weekend.

Previously, teams could offer a varied selection for their drivers depending on their aggressiveness or conservatism.

Just like last year, the drivers will have all the same sets available at the start of the weekend, which will be two hard, three medium and eight soft.

Although the selections have now been established, it is possible in the regulations to change the choices in exceptional circumstances up to 15 days before the start of an event.
