Indian tennis star Sania Mirza and partner Andreja Klepac of Slovenia crashed out of the ongoing Qatar Total Open after facing a semi-final loss on Thursday. Sania, who was competing in her first tournament in over 12 months, marked her return to tennis with a credible semi-final in the flagship event. Sania and her women’s doubles partner Klepac lost 5-7, 6-2, 5-10 to second seed Nicole Melichar and Dutch player Demi Schuurs in a thrilling three-set match.
Earlier Monday, Sania made a winning comeback on the WTA Tour, defeating Ukrainian pair Nadiia Kichenok and Lyudmyla Kichenok 6-4, 6-7 (5), 10-5 with Klepac in the first round of the flagship event .
This match was Sania’s first in 12 months and, incidentally, this Qatar Open was the last tournament she played in 2020 when all competitions were halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Previously, Mirza had revealed that she contracted coronavirus earlier this year.
She also revealed that staying away from her two-year-old was the most difficult thing she had faced after testing positive for the virus.
