In what can be considered sad news, an 80-year-old man, Mohammad Sharif, who has cremated thousands of unclaimed bodies, lovingly known as “Sharif Chacha”, is bedridden and in need of treatment.

The 80-year-old man resided in Faizabad district in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh.

The government conferred on him Padma Shri last year on Republic Day.

It is quite unfortunate that his family is currently going through a financial crisis. The family is still waiting for the pension against their allowance in order to be able to pay for their treatment.

The distinguished individual performed the last rites of numerous unclaimed corpses regardless of their religion for 27 years.

“I heard the news on TV but haven’t received the award yet. I fell ill almost two months ago, ”said Mohammed Sharif, bedridden.

“He was confined to bed because of his deteriorating health. The family’s financial situation is not good. We have a large family living in a house that has been rented for almost 70 years. He has yet to receive the award medallion and citation. He is being looked after by his sons and grandchildren, ”said a family member of awardee Padma Shri.
