WWE originally announced that the biggest match on last Monday’s Raw episode would be a six-way match between The Bloodline and New Day.
However, the match was interrupted by Bobby Lashley. This led to a Triple Threat Match between Roman, Lashley and Big E which was booked for the main event of the show.
It was reported on the day of the show that if Raw gets good marks with the appearance of the Universal Champion, it could cause WWE to change the brand’s division rules.
Dave Meltzer noted on the latest Wrestling Observer radio station that the decision to have this match was made Monday at noon in order to get the best marks possible.
“Obviously the six-man tag was going to be the main event of the show originally. What happened during the weekend shows in North Charleston and Augusta, they did a threesome between Roman Reigns, Bobby Lashley and Big E, and Vince [McMahon] got word that the matches were very good. So at noon on the day of the show, he did an about-face and moved the six-man tag to set this match as the main event, thinking it would be the best possible marks by putting this match in the spotlight. television. That’s why it wasn’t announced and that’s why it was a last minute thing.
Reigns will defend the Universal Title against Finn Balor, who will play his demon character, at Extreme Rules this weekend. Big E does not yet have a match scheduled for the event.
