Mumbai Indians (MI) captain Rohit Sharma set a unique record on Thursday by becoming the first player in Indian Premier League (IPL) history to score more than 1,000 points against a single franchise. Rohit achieved the feat in his 33-point shot against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a 2021 IPL clash in Abu Dhabi. The move allowed him to surpass the 1000 point mark against KKR. He amassed over 1000 points against KKR in the third round of MI which was played by spinner Varun Chakaravarthy.
The right-handed batsman had missed MI’s game against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday, coming out of six-day isolation at the time after returning from the canceled Manchester test against England. However, Rohit returned to action against KKR.
MI lost to CSK by 20 points.
It was KKR, led by Eoin Morgan, who won the draw and chose to play against MI on Thursday. MI lost the game by seven wickets to drop to sixth place on the IPL points table.
Rohit’s return to the side was the only change for MI.
MI captain Rohit Sharma said: “I feel great, I can’t wait to play. Just one change – Anmol is missing.” He added: “Some cricket bases that have been missed (against CSK) we have to do well. We talked about it and I hope we can perform.”
Despite Rohit’s feat, MI slipped to their second straight loss to the United Arab Emirates as KKR comfortably pursued the 156-point goal with seven wickets to lose, with Venkatesh Iyer and Rahul Tripathi both scoring their 50s.
