Ron DeSantis is reportedly waiting for Trump to knock himself out of the presidential race

Ron DeSantis (R) plans to sit back and wait for Donald Trump to “knock himself out” in his race for president, a source told Politico.

Florida’s governor has not stated that he is running for the GOP’s presidential nomination, but is widely expected to do so. Trump apparently sees DeSantis as a contender waiting in the wings and has increasingly attacked his one-time ally.

DeSantis will reportedly bide his time and avoid fights with Trump in anticipation of a hoped-for implosion by the former president.

A political donor said Trump’s announcement had always been expected and was already “baked into the formula” for DeSantis’ future plans.

Now the Republican governor “has the opportunity to govern for the next several months while Trump must try to convince people that he still has the ability and capabilities to govern effectively,” the adviser said.

“DeSantis is setting his time frame right now, so it’s almost like he’s watching Trump beat himself out,” he added.

Trump comes with a lot of baggage, including two impeachments, the January 6 riot, the secret White House documents he stashed at Mar-a-Lago, and the dismal interim GOP results, Lawson noted.

Trump even made a wild claim that he “fixed” the 2018 election for DeSantis by ordering the FBI and Justice Department to stop the vote count before he lost. There is no evidence that he did.

DeSantis has generally not responded to Trump’s attacks.

But when asked about Trump’s comments following his re-election win, DeSantis said at a news conference: “When you get things done, you take incoming fire, that’s just the nature of it. I’d like to tell people to check out last Tuesday’s scoreboard [election] night.”
