Finland will host a winter round of the World Rally Championship (WRC) for the first time this year. Rovaniemi, Lapland, will host a WRC event from February 26-28.
The need to find another location emerged in December when Rally Sweden announced that it was unable to host the planned event due to the coronavirus situation in the country.
Finland is now set to host two World Rally Championship events this year, with the annual summer rally in the town of Jyväskylä in central Finland already on the calendar.
“We have decided to look into the matter and explore our possibilities,” said Bitter riku, CEO of the AKK Sports rally organizer. “Among the different options, Rovaniemi with its strong culture in organizing winter rallies, its good reputation as an international event city and a large number of enthusiastic and experienced rally managers stood out.”
In a press release, Bitter said he was also impressed with how quickly the city of Rovaniemi adopted the idea.
“Our city supports the organization in every way possible by creating a high quality framework for this unique sporting event”, President of the Rovaniemi City Council Liisa Ansala said.
Sweden has reported nearly half a million cases of the coronavirus. Finland, which has about half of its population, has confirmed less than 40,000.
