Sasha Banks reflected on her hiatus from WWE last year, which had mixed reports on exactly what happened.
Banks and Bayley lost the women’s tag team titles at WrestleMania 35. At the time, it was reported that Banks and Bayley were not happy with this booking decision. She was originally booked for the Women’s Money In The Bank match that year, but was replaced by Bayley.
Banks later clarified in her documentary Chronicle that burnout and the focus on her mental health were the main reasons she took time off.
She returned to WWE TV in August 2019 and had been linked with Bayley in a lengthy storyline that had just ended during this year’s Hell in a Cell pay-per-view event where she won the Women’s Title of SmackDown.
Banks opened up about the break during an interview with Bleacher Report.
“I found myself. For so long I played Sasha Banks and forgot who Mercedes was. I forgot Mercedes created Sasha Banks and Mercedes had this dream of being a wrestler and I lost that .I took this time to rediscover my love and rediscover my passion and rediscover what I wanted in life and what I wanted to be and what I aspired to be because I continued to live in my past without thinking about my future .
I took the time for myself and I really discovered myself and after doing that it’s almost like the universe opened so many doors for me when I realized who Mercedes was. It was a great lesson and a great trip and I’m so grateful for all my hardships and rocks on the road as they have guided me and taught me so much. I’m so thankful for the time I got to take off because now I’m better than ever. I feel amazing. “
Banks also opened up about his acting future, facing Asuka in Survivor Series, and more. Check out the full interview here.
