Benchmarks hit new highs on Wednesday afternoon with Nifty hitting the 17,500 mark, led by gains in information technology stocks. At 1:40 p.m., the Sensex was trading at 15,702, up 458 points or 0.79% and the Nifty topping 17,500 at 17,513.50, up 133 points or 0.7%. The larger markets are also trading heavily, with the BSE Midcap Index and the BSE Smallcap Index adding 0.7 percent each.
In the currency market, the rupee opened on a flat note and edged up 2 paise to 73.66 against the US dollar. In the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 73.68 against the dollar, then edged up to 73.66.
On the specific stocks front, NTPC and Bharti Airtel climbed 5% each to top the list of BSE winners. Information technology stocks are also doing well, with HCL Tech, Infosys, TCS and Tech Mahindra each gaining 1-3% on BSE.
