‘Soleimani’ warship gives Iran presence in international seas, navy says

The commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy, Commodore Alireza Tangsiri, has stated that the country’s naval forces will be present in international waters, which he attributed to the recently unveiled warship Martyr Soleimani.

Tangiri made the comments yesterday, days after the patrol battleship was put on display at a unveiling ceremony in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Monday. “This is the Islamic Republic of Iran’s first domestically developed warship equipped with short- and medium-range vertical launch air defense systems,” said Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of the armed forces.

Tangiri explained that the ship, named after the late Quds Force commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US-ordered drone strike on Baghdad airport in early 2020, was destroyed over a three-year period. developed and manufactured locally by Iranian experts despite US-imposed sanctions on the country.

The naval commander added that the presence of IRGC naval forces in the Persian Gulf has contributed to lasting stability and maritime security in the region.

According to the open-source intelligence agency Janes, the Shahid Soleimani, as it is known locally, is the Navy’s new-class catamaran and the largest heavily armed ship in its arsenal.

The ship’s design “reduces the radar cross-section, allows it to operate in adverse weather conditions and makes it more maneuverable than similarly sized ships. It can also operate far from its bases, a role that the IRGCN, which operates largely small attack craft , traditionally has not performed.”

Iran’s PressTV reported that the hull of the Shahid Soleimani combat patrol craft “is equipped with radar-evasive stealth technology, meaning it has a very low radar cross-section.”

“Thanks to its shape, the ship can carry out all kinds of operations in the open sea and is able to navigate in adverse weather conditions.”

The warship can also “carry helicopters and is equipped with large helicopters intended for use by military helicopters and for the vertical take-off and landing of unmanned aerial vehicles.”
