Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said on Monday that the government is transferring the matter related to the death of Haryana BJP leader and TikTok star Sonali Phogat to the CBI.

“We have decided to transfer the Sonali Phogat investigation to the CBI. We have full confidence in our police, but people have repeatedly asked and her daughter has also demanded that the case be dealt with by the CBI,” Sawant said.

Sawant said the state government will hand over the investigation to the CBI today and will also write to the Interior Minister about it.

Phogat, whose death is being treated as a case of murder, died in the intervening night of August 22-23, a day after she arrived in Goa. She died after allegedly being drugged by her personal assistant Sudhir Sangwan and his associate Sukhwinder Singh. Both employees are now in police custody, who have been demanded up to 13 days in prison.

Pramod Sawant had previously said his government is willing to turn the matter over to the CBI if necessary. He went on to say that while he has faith in the Goa police, the people of Haryana had sought a CBI investigation into the case.

State police have so far arrested five people in connection with the case. These include two employees of Phogat who have been charged with murder.
