Surfing phenom dies after being attacked while riding the waves


Surf and skateboard prodigy Kalani David, 24, died Saturday after being assaulted while riding the waves in Costa Rica, according to a number of media reports.

David had a congenital heart condition known as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which can cause a rapid heart rate and seizures. Although he had undergone heart surgery six years ago, David continued to practice the sports he loved.

“Kalani was one of the most talented surfers/skaters on the planet,” Kelly Slater wrote. “Every time he was on his feet, he was constantly pushing the boundaries. Condolences to the huge community of friends Kalani had from coast to coast and around the world.”

Months later, he spent some six hours in bed until friends found him. Then he had surgery to have an extra muscle in his heart removed.
