Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Tuesday, despite President Joe Biden claiming the pandemic was “over,” that Congress must continue to invest money in America’s response to COVID.

Co-host Willie Geist asked, “If the President of the United States says the pandemic is over, what should people watching this morning learn?”

Murthy said: “I’m optimistic about how far we’ve come. We may forget what it was like two years ago when schools closed, when people didn’t go to work when we were concerned about our own health and safety and the safety of the people But right now, if you’re up to date on your vaccines, and if you’re a high-risk person taking a drug like Paxlovid if you get COVID-19, your chances of dying from COVID are remarkable low, and that’s a hard-fought progress.”

He added: “But there’s one thing I’m concerned about, Willie. To sustain and continue this progress, and to develop the next generation of vaccines, especially mucosal vaccines that will help block transmission even more effectively, we must sustain our investment in COVID. So what we can do is see this as an on and off switch, as if COVID is gone. You know, we’ve made tremendous progress, but we still have work to do that requires continued investment from Congress, continued investment in our country so that we can continue to make sure that everyone in our country gets the protection they need from COVID-19.”
