Teen charged as an adult in Valdosta . murder case


July 29—VALDOSTA—A teenager from Valdosta has been charged with the death of a 12-year-old after a crime, authorities say.

Jaden Stephan McCutchin, 17, was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children by the Lowndes County Grand Jury, according to a list of charges released Friday.

McCutchin is being tried as an adult, said Brad Shealy, a prosecutor for the Southern Judicial Circuit.

On Tuesday, May 3 at approximately 9:00 a.m., Valdosta police and detectives responded to a 911 call that a person had been shot at a 1,000-block residence on North Lee Street, according to a police statement released at the time.

“When officers arrived on the scene, they found a 12-year-old man in a home with a gunshot wound to his head,” police said. “Emergency medical services arrived at the scene and took the victim to South Georgia Medical Center, where he was later determined to have died.”

Police investigators determined that the 12-year-old and a 16-year-old had broken into different vehicles during the night. They stole several firearms from the vehicles, police said.

“They returned to the 16-year-old’s home, where they were playing with a pair of stolen pistols in a bedroom,” the statement said. “The gun that the 16-year-old was holding went off and shot the victim in the head.”

Police said investigators recovered six firearms from the home; five were confirmed stolen.
