Japan’s Shingo Kunieda fell short in his bid to win all four Grand Slam titles in one year after losing the US Open’s wheelchair singles final of the US Open 7-6 on Sunday to Alfie Hewett of Great Britain. (2), 6-1.

Japan’s Yui Kamiji was also defeated in the women’s wheelchair singles final when Diede de Groot returned from the Netherlands to win her eighth consecutive Grand Slam title 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.

Top class Kunieda and second seed Hewett traded two breaks before the Briton cruised into the tiebreaker to win the opening set, while Kunieda failed to keep one of his four service games in the second.

“His foundations were definitely more accurate than mine. In that sense, it was an all-out defeat,” said Kunieda, who managed to beat just 16 winners out of Hewett’s 39.

Kunieda won Wimbledon, the only Grand Slam he had not previously won, in July to complete his gold slam career, including Paralympic gold.

“I may have been slacking off a bit and the desire to win could have been a little stronger,” said 38-year-old Kunieda, as his run of four consecutive Grand Slams and back-to-back US Open crowns drew to a close.

“Losing at Grand Slams feels tough. Losing on a big stage for the first time in ages is good in a way. I’m glad I felt the frustration.”

28-year-old Kamiji broke her opponent three times to take the first set, but top seed de Groot responded with four breaks to win the second. Second seed Kamiji broke and won the opening game of the third set before De Groot won the next six to take the title.

“She was tense at the start and had a lot of double faults. I had to let her play like that,” said Kamiji, who has not beaten de Groot since February last year and lost for the fifth time in a row in the US Open final. .
