The big bull‘History:

Inspired by the events of the late ’80s and early’ 90s that shook the financial fabric of the country, India’s biggest turmoil is here.

The big bull‘ See again:

The big bull was announced for release on Disney + Hotstar in 2020 when a few films opted for an OTT release over the big screen due to the coronavirus pandemic. They did not know that Hansal Mehta will create a storm with Pratik Gandhi and make the masses fall in love with Scam 1992: The Story of Harshad Mehta. The pressure on the film was instantly created by viewers as 1992 scam created a reference.

What can we expect from a 155 minute movie that people got to see in 2020 via 10 episodes? Well, nothing good. All one can try, a story that was lived a few months ago will continue to flash and end with comparisons while watching the new movie. The Big Bull is largely a commercialized and filmed attempt at the story of Harshad Mehta taking the local fast to get to the starting point.

The film begins with a grandiose entry (not really) from Abhishek A Bachchan as Hemant Shah but with a little impact. Then it comes down to him to live in a chawl as a salaried man who has a cute love affair with a girl named Priya Shah (Nikita Dutta). In the midst of it all, Hemant enters the stock market world in an attempt to save his brother Viren Shah (Sohum Shah) from morons as he takes a loan from them. In no time at all, Hemant is making money by becoming a financial broker and living his life outside of the stock market. All of this is happening in a whirlwind that it takes time to get into the mood for the story of wealth.

Abhishek as Hemant Shah based on the life of Harshad Mehta makes a good effort to step into the character’s skin and it is seen. The good thing about Abhishek is that if given a character sketch, the actor nails the part effortlessly. He created a benchmark with Guru which was top notch. In The big bull, AB plays a Gujarati man again and glimpses of Gurukant Desai can be seen in his role as Hemant Shah.

The actor brings his best to the table, but the shortcomings and storyline details don’t add up overall. The downside to the movie is the dialogue that lacks punch as you would expect from a movie like this.

Not only that, the supporting actors give less support to the main character as well as the movie. Sohum Shah as Viren showed his best with Tumbbad but fails to create a brand like this in The big bull. The same goes for Ileana D’Cruz who plays Meera Rao, journalist in the film. She is the narrator of the film but is dull.

Popular character artists like Supriya Pathak and Saurabh Shukla are good at their parts written for them, that’s all. While Nikita Dutta is only seen as a pretty face in the movie.

One more thing about 1992 scam who stuck with people is the title song. But with The big bull, CarryMinati and other artists are half-hearted.

Although he is claimed to be ‘inspired by real events’, after watching 1992 scam, the fictitious names of the characters make the film more insignificant.

It will be hard to accept The big bull but “try it yourself” may not hurt your eyes, or it might.

The big bull‘Verdict:

The big bull is like a raging bull in a china shop, read a reckless attempt to recreate Harshad Mehta’s story onscreen for the second time.
