Liverpool are hopeful that Thiago Alcantara’s influence can make a significant difference after they come close to a deal for David Alaba.

Reports on Wednesday claimed the Reds were exploring the possibility of bringing Alaba to Anfield in January.

Jurgen Klopp is looking for more defensive cover following Virgil van Dijk’s injury at the end of the season ACL.

And while Alaba may not be the natural center-back Klopp desperately needs, he seems to think so.

The Austrian is able to play anywhere in defense or in midfield and Klopp is believed to see Alaba as additional cover in the heart of defense.

The door has apparently opened for Liverpool to raid Bayern Munich in January due to his contractual situation.

Alaba is out of contract next summer and can go on a free transfer at that time or sign a pre-contract with a foreign club in January.

Respected Bild Journalist Christian Falk said the latest round of negotiations on a new deal failed to secure a deal.

The Bundesliga champions now seem resigned to losing the player at the end of his contract.

Moreover, it is now claimed that Thiago could help Liverpool grease the wheels on a deal.

The Spain star moved to Liverpool himself over the summer after finding himself in a very similar situation.

Liverpool maintain healthy relationship with Bayern bosses after getting Thiago’s signature. Besides, he also claimed that he could also help Alaba move to Anfield.

Alaba almost left Bavaria this summer, but now looks certain to end his 10 years with the Bundesliga champions.

Barnes assesses Van Dijk’s injury

John Barnes, meanwhile, says Liverpool have to be cruel to be kind to get back on track in the title race

Barnes says Klopp and his teammates must stop talks Virgil van Dijk and focus on the players available for the German coach.

Barnes said BonusCodeBets: “Losing a player like Virgil van Dijk is a huge loss for Liverpool. But that depends on how the team focuses on their loss for this season. If they spend too much time thinking about playing without it, it will naturally become a negative factor.

“I remember when I was playing. Whenever big players get injured, Liverpool’s philosophy has always been that the team is the most important thing. This is something that Jurgen Klopp brought back.
