Joe Root hit 77 and Tom Curran produced a good overall performance as the English tour prepared for their white ball games against South Africa with an intra-squad game in Newlands in Cape Town on Saturday. Root was the top scorer with 77 as Team Buttler beat Team Morgan by 50 points in a 40-on-1 game. Curran took four for 25 for England captain Eoin Morgan’s side before making the second-highest score of 31 for the losers. The match was a warm-up to three Twenty20 internationals and three one-day internationals against South Africa, starting with a T20 international in Newlands on Friday.
England will play two T20 intra-team matches at Paarl on Monday. Four of the tour’s six matches will take place in Newlands and two in Paarl.
South Africa canceled a scheduled warm-up match on Saturday after a second team member tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday.
Root made his 77 of 77 balls and shared a 103 fourth wicket partnership with Sam Billings (52).
Team Buttler were eliminated for 255 points in 39.1 overs, losing their last five wickets for 28 points, three of which fell to Curran, an average pace.
Each of Team Morgan’s specialist batsmen hit double the numbers but no one scored more than captain 20. His team slipped to 102 for six before Chris Woakes (55) and Curran put in 79 for the seventh wicket.
Somerset all-rounder Lewis Gregory took three for 18 for the winning team.
