Mikel Arteta has responded to Lucas Torreira’s moving public appeal to leave the club.
Arteta calls on the midfielder to remain calm after the Arsenal midfielder asked to be sold this summer following the death of his mother.
Torreira joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018 and made a positive impression under former manager Unai Emery.
The Uruguayan international, however, found life much more difficult in his second season at the club, after Emery put him in a more advanced role.
He then featured prominently for the first few weeks of Arteta’s reign but suffered an ankle injury and is now struggling to regain his place in the squad when he returns to form.
The midfielder has been loaned to Atletico Madrid following Arsenal’s decision to sign Thomas Partey in September.
But after starting on a very bright note in Spain, his career suffered again and was unable to earn a regular place in Diego Simeone’s squad.
Torreira then asked publicly to end his European career and complete a dream transfer to Boca Juniors.
Arteta expressed sympathy for Torreira’s plight, stressing that any decision should be okay with all parties involved.
“We contacted him, we spoke to him, we know how difficult it is for him. He was really attached to his mother and his family and it is a difficult time for him emotionally, ”Arteta told reporters.
“There are a lot of thoughts and things going through his mind but… ‘tranquilo’ when things are like this, now is not the time to make decisions.
“I understand that I understand how he feels emotionally about his need and responsibility to be closer to his family, but now is not the time to make a decision. Certainly this is a decision that will have to be taken by different parties and now nothing is going to change.
