Last year historic Tuscan property Castelfalfi has undergone a massive update that includes both ownership changes and a new look unveiled, with more changes to come at the resort this year. The hotel, which covers no less than 2700 hectares, will continue to innovate its accommodation, culinary offerings and wide range of activities. We spoke to Ambra Rollero, Director of Marketing and Communications for Castelfalfi about what to expect in 2023.

Old meets new

A stay in Castelfalfi allows you to enjoy modern luxury while taking a step back in history, all on the same day. The property features a Borgo, a traditional Italian village center that is over 2000 years old and has a rich history. “Originally inhabited by the Etruscans, the estate was continuously inhabited and cultivated for more than 2,000 years, before being managed by Romans, Visigothic warlords and Florentine aristocrats, until it was taken over by SP Lohia in 2021,” says Rollero. The central San Floriano Church is consecrated and perfect for a destination wedding reflecting Castelfalfi’s rich cultural history. As you follow the main street of the Borgo, you will encounter boutiques and apartments, ending at La Rocca, the property’s gourmet restaurant in a restored castle. Here you can enjoy a gastronomic experience and, weather permitting, an incredible sunset while overlooking the vast Tuscan countryside.

A dream for activity lovers

The extensive grounds surrounding Castelfalfi are also the setting for a wide range of activities – it’s impossible to get bored on this property as there are 40 indoor and outdoor experiences available to book. Golfers will be delighted to play on Italy’s largest course, with 27 holes with the option to choose between a lake or mountain course. Another activity to immerse yourself in nature is their on-site truffle hunt, where a guide and two Lagotto Romagnolo dogs help you discover the most expensive fungus in the world. You can also practice your hand at archery, climb a climbing wall or explore the adventure park with suspension bridges and a tree village. For families, there is a designated Falfy Kids Club for children from three to twelve years old with a range of creative and educational activities. Castelfalfi is also close to several pretty towns, ideal for a day trip, but bear in mind that you may not get around due to the many options on site and beyond. “We are located 30 minutes’ drive from San Gimignano, Volterra, Florence or Pisa and only an hour’s drive from the coast, a week is just not enough time to enjoy everything the estate has to offer,” says Rollero.

Gastronomy and discovery

Castelfalfi is an excellent place to not only eat good food and drink good wine, but also a place to see how wine, olive oil, honey and more are harvested and produced. “Castelfalfi has a 25-hectare vineyard with 10,000 olive trees,” says Rollero. “The estate produces 100,000 bottles of wine and up to 40 quintals of olive oil per year.” If you are a wine lover, make sure to visit the vineyards and winery and then taste the different wines to get a taste of the surrounding land. With seven restaurants on site, you won’t have to be bored for a moment during your stay. The Country Club House restaurant is a wonderful setting for a pasta lunch, while La Via del Sale is excellent for dinner to try dishes like langoustines with a side of the beautiful Italian countryside.

More updates to follow

In 2022, Castelfalfi unveiled redesigned rooms, a new lobby, a redesigned Ecrù Bar with panoramic terrace and the agri-shop at the Tenuta Agricola. The property also unveiled an adventure park and padel court with more activities this year. This year, even more new rooms and suites will be added, created by international designers, with additional updates to the garden and landscape. In addition, the restaurant in the main building will be completely renovated with the new offer of live cooking demonstrations. These sessions will “bring the guest even closer to the tradition of Italian cuisine, in a new and comfortable location,” says Rollero.

With so many new updates, even if you’ve visited Castelfalfi in the past, you’ll have a lot of new things to discover. And with a plethora of experiences, restaurants and bars to choose from, you may not be able to try everything the property has to offer in one vacation, but you are certainly encouraged to try.
