Union ministers, CMs pay tribute to Sushma Swaraj on her death anniversary

New Delhi: Several Union ministers, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Assam Chief Himanta Biswa Sarma among others on Saturday paid tribute to former Union minister Sushma Swaraj on her death anniversary.

Sushma Swaraj, a prominent face of the Bharatiya Janata party, died on August 6, 2019 at the age of 67.

“Sincere obeisances to Sushma Swaraj Ji on her death anniversary. An exceptional orator, astute leader and able administrator, Sushma Ji’s contributions to public life will always be remembered,” tweeted Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya.

Swaraj, who died of cardiac arrest, was widely respected and known for helping Indians around the world. The 67-year-old politician who served as foreign minister in Modi’s first administration was nicknamed India’s “supermother” by The Washington Post.

“Remember Sushma Swaraj ji fondly on the anniversary of her passing. In our thoughts, so many times and in so many ways,” tweeted Secretary of State Dr. S Jaishankar.

She was a woman of many firsts during her glittering career: the youngest minister in the Haryana, the first female prime minister of Delhi (and the BJP), the first female spokesperson for a national party.

Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal tweeted: “Tribute to the iconic leader, statesman, outstanding parliamentarian, our guide, beloved Sushma Swaraj ji on her dying day.”

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur also paid tribute to the former Union minister.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal wrote on Twitter: “My heartfelt tribute to former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj ji on her death anniversary. She will live on in our hearts forever as a compassionate leader who served the nation with the greatest dedication and dedication has served.”

“Smt. Sushma Swaraj Ji was a legendary politician, a vibrant leader and an impeccable orator. She left a lasting legacy. Her illustrious career is an inspiration to us. Today, on the occasion of her death anniversary, I remember her and bring my tribute,” said the Union’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pralhad Joshi.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan called Sushma Swaraj “an epitome of unwavering dedication to public service.”

“She is a stalwart of the BJP and a stateswoman, she set high standards for every effort she made. I was always supportive of her guidance. I remember older sister Sushma ji on her Punyathithi,” he tweeted.

Swaraj, a law graduate and employed by the Supreme Court, was elected seven times as a Member of Parliament and three times as a member of various legislative assemblies such as Haryana and Delhi. Like so many others in the BJP, her political career began with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of the RSS.

“My tribute to one of India’s popular and admired leaders, Smt Sushma Swaraj Ji on her dying day,” said Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said Swaraj is “one of the best leaders our country has ever seen”.

“Lovingly remember Smt. Sushma Swaraj ji on her dying day. Very humble person, inspiring and one of the best leaders our country has ever seen,” he tweeted.

Alongside them, the prime ministers of several states commemorated Swaraj on her death anniversary.

“A humble tribute to an exceptional orator, a devoted and compassionate leader, Smt. Sushma Swaraj ji on her punyatithi,” tweeted Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu recalled Sushma Swaraj, tweeted: “A prolific orator, an exemplary parliamentarian, a compassionate person who devoted all her life to the public service and to protect the interests of India. On her Punyatithi, I fondly remember the former Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj Ji.”

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Sushma Swaraj was “one of the best parliamentarians and orators of India.”

“She served the people in various roles from advocate to minister of Haryana, Delhi CM, leader of opposition and cabinet minister in Union Govt. My tribute to her on her dying day,” he wrote.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, “Tribute to former Delhi CM Smt. Sushma Swaraj ji on her dying day.”
