Washington: Even as it fights daily attacks from the Taliban amid a spiraling economic crisis, the Pakistani military is getting a big thumbs up from the US.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Friday congratulated General Asim Munir on his appointment as Pakistan’s army chief, noting that the two countries have a longstanding defense partnership.
According to a Pentagon reading of the call, Austin congratulated General Munir on his appointment as Chief of Staff and discussed areas of mutual interest and recent regional developments.
“Today I had the opportunity to congratulate General Asim Munir, the newly appointed Chief of Staff of Pakistan,” Austin said.
“The United States and Pakistan have a longstanding defense partnership and I look forward to working with General Munir,” he said in a tweet.
